Sumatra, Indonesia is a hotspot for all kinds of earthquakes. The December 2004 tsunami was one
of the dramatic examples of destructive earthquakes of the world. Predicting the destruction of an earthquake beforehand can help in
saving lives by making the affected people aware of the intensity of the earthquake and the destruction it may cause.
This tool does the same, it helps geologists or scientists to input earthquake data points of an earthquake which
has just been detected. The tool scans the history data set and shows you similar earthquakes in the past. After analyzing
the pattern of earthquake history, you can predict how fatal the detected earthquake can be. A savings of minutes, or even seconds, in notifying emergency response teams in areas of probable damage can be very significant.
The tool has a nice GUI showing the map of Indonesia, its subduction zone just off the coast on the West and fault lines on the Sumatran island. This tool is intended to be used by geologists who monitor seismograms to detect earthquakes. Though this tool only targets Sumatra, it does have future enhancement options to scale it globally.
GIS technologies used: Map Objects-JAVA edition, and j2sdk were used
along with the Eclipse IDE to develop this tool.
