You will be given a edoras account for this class, which you will use for each of your programming assignments. There are various 'open labs' around campus from which you can access your account using ssh or Xwin-32, but you can install these utilities [for free] on your own laptop or desktop computer if you wish to access edoras from off-campus. (Mac and UNIX/Linux systems need no additional sortware.) You should CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD on your account by using the command: passwd Also, CHANGE YOUR FINGER INFO with: chfn ...so that it no longer says 'Generic Account 0nnn' but instead lists your real first and last name. Check your results with: finger $USER ...to see if the 'In real life:' field actually lists your correct name. See the README file in your home directory for directions to set up mail forwarding and a calendar file. For all our programming projects, you only need a terminal emulator that can connect via ssh (the SecureSHell protocol). If you have a UNIX system, ssh is almost certainly already installed. If you are [unwisely] using Microsoft Windows, there are several alternatives: SSH: https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/download-home-edition.html PuTTy: http://edoras.sdsu.edu/files/putty.exe If you are new to UNIX, there are several tutorials at: http://edoras.sdsu.edu/doc/unixtut/ If you want, you can get an X-windows emulator. You have this capability 'for free' if you're running Mac/Linux/UNIX. Otherwise, go to: http://edoras.sdsu.edu/~download/xwin32.html ...and enter your RedID number to get a license that will last the entire semester. Further down on that same page is the directions for installing it. (You might find this convenient; but you don't really need it for this class.)
