The outcomes from our experiences at SCC16 were rich, and resulted in several successes. This year, SDSU was invited to participate in SCC17, which will be held in Denver, CO. Our SCC17 plans include: development of a long-term plan for an interdisciplinary HPC course; requested funding for the from the University; developed vendor partnerships; and long-term commitments from faculty mentors to help mentor students. This year, SDSU will partner with Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) and IBM to form a cross-institutional Student Cluster Competition (SCC) team which will conduct research experiments to examine how well the IBM OpenPOWER Spectrum Cluster software stack performs on a heterogeneous cluster consisting of 84 POWER8 cores and eight Nvidia P100 GPUs. CPU, GPU, and storage nodes will be interconnected over EDR InfiniBand. All cluster components will be provided by our vendor sponsor, IBM. The outcome of our research activities will enhance students’ experiences of using HPC, motivate them to solve complex problems using advanced HPC skills and facilities, and provide feedback to improve the OpenPOWER Spectrum software stack, which will ultimately benefit the broader HPC community. Having SDSU and SWOSU students participate in the 2017 Student Cluster Competition will inspire further interest in the field, and expose our students to career possibilities by providing a forum where students can network with professionals from industry and national research laboratories.

This years faculty mentors include: Dr. Mary Thomas (CS); Dr. Chris Paolini (Engineering); Dr. James Otto (CSRC), Dr. Jose Castillo (Director, CSRC); Drs. Barabara Bailey and Peter Blomgren (Math/Stats); and Dr. Jeremy Evert (CS, Southwestern Oklahoma State University).
